How to charge Lithium batteries by Inverter/ups is an interesting topic. The safest way to charge a lithium battery for an Inverter/UPS is to understand the Inverter/UPS charging system before connecting the Lithium battery to the existing Inverter/UPS.https://timestech.in/tips-and-tricks-to-maintain-your-lithium-battery-inverter/

  • The installation of Lithium batteries available in the market is incompatible with the Inverter/UPS made for Tubular lead Acid batteries. Sometimes, it can be dangerous to do so as the charging pattern of tubular lead Acid and lithium batteries differs.
  • So, one has to see the charging pattern and manufacturer’s specification before installing the Lithium battery on the existing Inverter/UPS made for Tubular lead Acid batteries.
  • Please do not charge the lithium battery on any inverter/UPS, as we need to see the specifications of the BMS installed in the Lithium battery its specifications, which need to be matched by the Inverter Charger and discharged. 
  • These are the important parameters which are to be seen and checked before installing a Lithium battery with Inverter/UPS:
  • The low battery cutoff voltage is set in any inverter/UPS, and there is a low voltage cutoff set in the Lithium battery BMS. Generally speaking, the BMS has the low voltage set as an extra precautionary voltage to cut off the battery if the Charger fails to cut off the voltage at a low battery.
  • The High cut of the Inverter for charging the battery is very important. If the maximum battery voltage and the cutoff voltage are mismatched and higher than the battery voltage to be charged, the battery can be swollen or have a blast.
  • For example, if the Lithium LifePO4 chemistry battery is there and we make 12.8 Volts by connecting four cells in series and the maximum voltage per cell for charging is 3.6 volts and the total voltage for charging will be 3.6 multiplied by 4, which comes to be 14.4 Volts so if this voltage is crossed, then the battery will be in trouble.
  • Another important point is that the Lead Acid battery charger has a floating stage, which keeps the battery charging after the battery is charged at 14.4 Volts, which kills the Lithium battery life.

Here are some additional safety tips:

  • Avoid charging your lithium battery with any random Inverter/UPS.
  • Do not charge your battery if it is below freezing point.
  • Do not pierce or puncture the Lithium battery.
  • If you notice any unusual behaviour from your lithium battery, such as excessive heat or swelling, stop charging, as this can lead to a blast of the lithium battery.

Here are some tips to prolong the lifespan of your lithium-ion battery:

  • Avoid letting your battery completely drain. Keeping your battery between 5% and 10% helps improve lithium battery life.
  • Avoid fully charging your battery all the time. It is okay to top off your battery, but try to avoid charging it to 100% regularly.
  • If you will store your battery for an extended period, charge it to about 50% of its capacity.

By following these tips, you can safely charge and prolong the lifespan of your lithium-ion battery.
